December 2012
Dear Friend,
The holidays are a time to reflect – we look back on the year that is drawing to a close and think about what we want to do in the year to come. I want to lead the way to effective treatments and, one day, a cure, for stomach and esophageal cancer – and I hope that you'll join me.
Some progress has been made in research into the causes and treatments for stomach and esophageal cancer since I founded DeGregorio Family Foundation in 2006 – but not enough to overcome these deadly malignancies. Together, more than 1.3 million people will be diagnosed with an upper GI malignancy each year – and that number is not getting smaller. Despite aggressive treatments like removal of the stomach or esophagus, chemotherapy and radiation, five year survival rates remain dismal at approximately 15%. To date, very little funding has been dedicated to support research on these deadly cancers, which has meant minimal progress being made in their prevention or improvement in their survival once diagnosed.
DeGregorio Family Foundation (DFF) is the ONLY private foundation that is funding research into the pathogenesis, early diagnosis, and treatment of Upper Gastrointestinal Malignancies. DFF has awarded nearly $1 million in grants since our founding. DFF seeks to fund research that is innovative and will be a catalyst to collaboration. In January 2012, DFF awarded $250,000 in grants to two projects. We hope that these grants for promising researchers and clinical scientists worldwide can make meaningful strides in gastric and esophageal cancer research, as we know that the need for private research dollars is significant. In January 2013, we will again be making another $250,000 award – but this is not enough to match the enormous global impact of these diseases. DFF is working to turn the deadly facts about these cancers into fiction – but we need your help!
You can join us in turning the deadly facts about stomach and esophageal cancer into fiction by making a tax-deductible gift to DFF. One hundred percent (100%) of your contribution will support research into these deadly diseases. Visit our website: www.degregorio.org to learn more about our funded research and make a gift today.
Thank you, in advance, for your continuing support.
Sincerely,
Lynn DeGregorio
President
